HSK Level 3

HSK Level III) assesses the test-taker’s ability to use everyday Mandarin Chinese. Those who pass HSK (Level III) can communicate in basic Mandarin in their daily, academic, and professional lives. They can also communicate in Mandarin while traveling in China.

HSK Level III is designed for students who have studied Mandarin for three semesters (one and a half academic years), with 2-3 hours of classes each week. Students have mastered 600 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.

HSK 3 Test Structure

I. Listening

There are 10 items in Section I. The recording for each item will be played twice. For each item, a dialogue and several pictures will be provided. Test-takers must choose the picture that corresponds to what they hear.

There are 10 items in Section II. The recording for each item will be played twice. For each item, a short passage will be read, followed by a statement, which also appears on the paper. Test-takers must decide whether the statement is true or false.

There are 10 items in Section III. The recording for each item will be played twice. Each item consists of a dialogue between two people. A third person will then ask a question about the dialogue. There will be three possible answers on the test paper from which test-takers can choose the best answer based on what they hear.

There are 10 items in Section IV. The recording for each item will be played twice. Each item consists of 4-5 sentences of dialogue between two people. A third person will then ask a question based on the dialogue. There will be three possible answers on the test paper from which test-takers can choose the best answer based on what they hear.

II. Reading

There are 10 items in Section I. In this section, 20 sentences will be provided and test-takers will be asked to correlate them.

There are 10 items in Section II. For each item, one or two sentences will be provided, with one word/phrase missing. Test-takers must choose one of the suggested words/phrases to fill in the blank.

There are 10 items in Section III. This section consists of 10 short passages, each followed by a question. Test-takers must choose the best answer from the 3 options provided.

III. Writing

There are 5 items in Section I. Each item lists several words. Test-takers must form a sentence using the given words.

There are 5 items in Section II. Each item provides a sentence with several parts missing. Test-takers must fill in the blanks with the appropriate characters.
