HSK Level 5
HSK Level V evaluates the test-taker’s ability to apply Mandarin Chinese in daily life. Those who pass HSK (Level V) can read Chinese-language newspapers and magazines, enjoy Mandarin-language films and dramas, and deliver complete speeches in Mandarin.
HSK Level V is intended for students who have studied Mandarin for 2-4 hours per week for more than two academic years. Students have mastered 2,500 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.
HSK 5 Test Structure
I. Listening
There are 20 items in Section I. The recording for each item will be played only once. Each item consists of a dialogue between two people, with a third person then asking a question about the dialogue. Four possible answers will be provided on the test paper. Test-takers must choose the best answer based on what they hear.
There are 25 items in Section II. The recording for each item will be played only once. This section consists of 4-5 sentences of dialogue or monologue followed by one or more questions. Four possible answers will be provided on the test paper. Test-takers must choose the best answer from the four answer choices.
II. Reading
There are 15 items in Section I. This section consists of several readings, each with several blank parts that need to be filled in with words or sentences. Test-takers must choose the best answer from four possible answers.
There are 10 items in Section II. Each item consists of one passage and four possible answers. Test-takers must choose which of the four answers best fits the passage.
There are 20 items in Section III. This section consists of several readings followed by several questions. Test-takers must choose the best answer from 4 provided options.
III. Writing
There are 8 items in Section I. Each item consists of several words where test-takers must construct sentences.
There are 2 items in Section II. The first item consists of several words and requires test-takers to write an 80-character article using the provided words. The second item consists of a picture and requires test-takers to write an 80-character article based on the picture.
