How Do We Determine the Language Level of a Mandarin Talent?

Of course, with a language proficiency test. The most popular Mandarin language proficiency test that is internationally recognized is the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi 汉语水平考试). The HSK is currently divided into 6 levels, as follows:

Beginner Level

HSK 1 & HSK 2

Intermediate Level

HSK 3 + HSKK Basic
An HSK 3 certificate is usually sufficient to apply for a one-year or one-semester Mandarin language scholarship at universities in China.

HSK 4 + HSKK Intermediate
An HSK 4 certificate can be used to apply for an undergraduate degree program (bachelor’s degree) scholarship or as a skill attachment when applying to companies looking for Mandarin-speaking talent.

Advanced Level

HSK 5 + HSKK Advanced
An HSK 5 certificate can be used to apply for scholarships for undergraduate (bachelor’s), graduate (master’s), or as a skill attachment when applying to companies looking for Mandarin-speaking talent.

HSK 6 + HSKK Advanced
An HSK 6 certificate can be used to apply for scholarships for graduate (master’s), doctoral (Ph.D.) programs, or as a skill attachment when applying to companies looking for Mandarin-speaking talent. The HSK 6 exam is usually taken by prospective teachers, lecturers, translators, or anyone who wants to challenge themselves — including you!
